Online Profits

Online Business Profits

You have heard the saying “work smarter not harder” this is true for your online business as well. Your goal is to increase profits not increase your work load.

Offer an up-sell for your product or services. A good example of an up-sell is a popular game console sells a basic edition for $295.95 now they also offer a premium edition for $395.95. The difference is two components that are required for specific game play. To upgrade at a later date those two components would cost approximately $150.00 dollars more. Most people will purchase the premium edition as they see this as a good deal and getting more for their money.

You will want to test various methods of providing an up-sell for your particular service or product. You can offer this premium edition or enhanced service prior to customer purchasing or after they have purchased and before final purchase settlement.

Subscriptions are an excellent way to increase your profits. If customers like your service they will be happy and renew each year. It requires little time, effort, and cost to keep them as customers and happy. It is much easier to keep someone happy than to build a new relationship from scratch. A subscription service is easily done. By using your imagination you will find one that fits your target audience. Here are a couple suggestions to help start.
Have a popular site category on your website. Charge a yearly fee for inclusion in your links or directory. This will pay for your time and effort to review each link request and also allows discourages the casual link requester which also improves the quality of your links.

Offer a printed copy of your newsletter. Include expanded details on information and also coupons or discounts that readers of the regular newsletter would not receive.

Create a subscriber only service and offers information or services that are not immediately available to someone visiting your site. An example would be. If you have a housing referral site that gives housing information. For a fee they can also get contact information for any of the rentals or for sale homes on your site.

Continually follow up with customers and potential customers. Let them know you are available for any questions or concerns they may have. If you have any new products or services just in and not announced on your site as of yet. Be sure to inform the customer who has purchased a companion service or product of these new offerings first. An auto responder can make this task much easier than manually doing each one.

Work on building relationships. You want your online business to be considered friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. Offer to go above and beyond expectations if possible. You will set yourself apart by gong from the online world to the outside world even if it is just a simple thank you card sent in the regular mail. People do remember such acts and will reward you with future purchases, and a word of mouth recommendation to others.

If necessary get rid of the high maintenance customer. You will never be able to make everyone happy. Some customers are so constantly demand extra’s but not willing to pay for them; others are just rude to you on a regular basis. Be polite but explain that you will no longer be able to supply them with goods or services for them. You can direct them to a competitor’s website if you wish. But it is your online store and you have the choice as to if you want to serve them or not. The goal is to make money and increase profits not increase your work load and headaches.

Business Lega Structures/ Understanding Corporations

Corporation

Why Incorporate Your Business?

Consider This:
Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of a copration will
guide you in selecting the right business structure for your business.

Unlike a sole proprietorship or partnership, a corporation is
difficult to form. Business owners must check with local government
offices on specific details on registering their business as a corporation.

Once the corporation application is approved by the government
the business will need to apply for and file a federal identification
number.

Advantages

The corporation is a separate legal entity. The corporation is
treated separately from the individual business owners.

Liability is limited. Individual owners will not be held
responsible for corporation debts.

Owners buy shares in the business, which are bought and
sold.

Stronger stability withing corporations. Death or illness of
a business partner/shareholder does not end the business.

Invertors purchase stock in the corporation which contributes
to long term corporate funds/stability.

A board of directors and officers manage and make all
decisions.

Board of directors members might have several different
backgrounds and a wide range of skills to add to the
business.

Disadvantages

Corporations are subject to
extensive regulation by the local and federal
government.

A corporations dividends affect tax returns
of corporations share holders.

Profits are subject taxation.

Forming a corporation is expensive and requires
professional help to incorporate.

Various taxes are imposed on corporations by government.

"Subchapter S" Corporations

Are a special form of corporate entity where they are allowed
to be treated like a partnership and the income taxed to the
shareholders. Other requirements must also be met.

In conclusion in selecting a legal structure for your business you must
consider:

-The nature of your business.

-What your goal is long term and short term.

-Will you seek investors.

-The cost to run or start the business under different structures.

-What legal structure will suit your business long term.

Always seek professional advice when selecting the
legal structure suitable for your business plan. Remember, most entrepreneurs
start out with a sole proprietorship which is easiest to start.
Later on you might decide to recruit partners or even incorporate.

Business Partnerships

A Look At Business Partnerships

Business partnerships are started every day by literally
thousands of small/home based business owners.

Before signing their name on the dotted line and agreeing
to the partnership, the parties involved should
discuss the pro's and con's connected
with the business venture.

What is a partnership?

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA)"a
partnership is an association of two or more people as
co-owners of a business for profit."

Experts recommend the members of the partnership
sign an agreement which shows their
obligations to the business.

Business partner roles should always be shown in
the contract. Division of profit shares for each member
should also be entered in the contract. One section of the contract
should show steps to end the partnership.

Note: Limited partnerships are started by co-owners who
contract to risk an agreed upon investment in the business.

All members involved in the partnership should hire an
experienced contract lawyer to handle legal matter.s This step
will protect all partners involed in the business.

Advantages

A partnership is easier to start than a corporation.

Partnership are easier to deal with than corporation although
less flexible than a proprietorship.

The partnership pays no federal or state taxes.
The profits obtained from the business go directly to the
partners.

Partnerships, like proprietorships, pay no state or
federal tax. Although, partners are required to pay personal tax on all
business profits.

Startup Money- is easier to obtain for a partnership
than a sole proprietorship because two or more owners are able to invest
money in the venture.

The skills and experience of all partners are combined to handle
decisions.

Disadvantages

If one partner wishes to end the business the
partnership will terminate. Buy out issues might arise. This is
one reason why buy out issues should be covered in a written
contract before entering into the partnership.

Partnerships have to jump through many hoops to obtain the
financing they require while corporations find an easier
road to travel when seeking financing.

Note that each partner is liable for the business debts incurred
by other business partners. So if one business partner makes a very
costly business decision the other partners will also
be liable for the debt.

A blending of experiences and skills is one unique advantage
of a good partnership. A clear advantage over a
sole proprietorship where limited skills/experience might
limit success. Although the Partnership might sound good
on the surface you should choose business partners carefully.

Business Legal Structures

Business Legal Structures

Before you start your own home based business or small business
you must consider the legal structure.

Most work at home business ventures are started by an individual
who works solo.

This is considered a sole proprietorship. Even though this is
often true it is still beneficial to know the three common
business structures so that if your business changes in
the future you will be able to adapt your business
structure to suit the new situation.

This brief article will take a look at one of the three
typical business structures, the advantages along with
disadvantages. Future articles will cover partnerships,
incorporations.

Sole Proprietorship

The sole proprietorship is defined as a business owned
and operated by one person. To start this type of business
all you need to obtain is a business license or permit if
required, and open your business. This is considered the most
common type of small or home based business.

Advantages
Let's take a quick look at typical sole proprietorship advantages.

Easy to start: A sole proprietorship is the easiest and
simplest form of business to start. There are fewer legal
restrictions. You can start the business using your own
name legally. For example, if your name were Fred Smitz. You
could start the business under your name without any problems.
Or simply name it Fred Smitz's Company. If you decide to hire
employee's later on you will need to register your business
with the federal government. State and local registration
might also be required.

Profits: As sole owner of the business you do not have to share
your profits with anyone. And you make all the required financial
decisions.

Control: You are in complete control of the business. Your word
is final. No business partners to interfere in decisions.

Quick Action: You are able to quickly respond to any business
situation without having to consider other management decisions
or partner input. Quick action in a crisis is often important to overall
business success.

Taxes: There are no special extra taxes for this business form.
Profits become the owner's personal income and are taxed in that
manner.

Disadvantages

Unlimited Liability: As the sole proprietor of your home based
or small business you will be responsible for all the debts that
your business will incur. These might easily exceed your
initial investment quite quickly. It is important that you are
aware your business liability will also extend to your personal
property.

Less Money: Capital is limited to your personal assets or
the money that you borrow and invest in your business.
This business startup historically has less capital available than
other business structures. Also, sole business owners usually
have more difficulty borrowing money to invest in the business.

Business Emergencies: If you get sick or are injured your business
will suffer. You will not have a business partner or others to
rely on to handle your business.

Limited Experience: You will rely solely on your own business
experience which might be quite limited. And you will not be
able to share view points or compare with others with more
experience in other areas.

Deductions: Sole proprietos miss out on a boat load of
business deductions available to other business structures.
These inclue workers compensation and certain health and
insurance coverage.

Many consider the sole proprietorship advantages out- weigh
the disadvantages. And this might be true in your business
situation..

Personal:

Evaluate how you deal with problems are you a procrastinator or
do you jump right in and start projects. Knowing your
personality type will help you manage your business properly.

Learn to take frequent breaks. Every hour take a 5 minute break.
Get up and move around. Drink water or fresh juice to revitalize
your mind and body.

Take a walk. Get out in the open air and away from your
computer. Even 10 minutes will revitalize your spirits.

Learn some simple breathing techniques to help relieve stress.

Place personal items in your home office to help you relax and
remind you that there is life after work.

Office Related:

Get organized. Make this one of your first priorities.
Jump right in and organize your desk. Create order before you begin, things
will go more smoothly.

Decide how you are going to organize your computer files and
stick with the system.

If you are on the Internet frequently invest in good anti virus
software and a firewall.

Make a schedule for regularly backing up your computer files.

End the day with checking or making your to-do list for the next
day.

If you are not computer savvy, find someone who can teach you
not only the how-to but also the possibilities of your computer
and the Internet.

Find an office system that matches your skills and abilities.
Keep your system simple. Leave complicated office technology
to big business.

Home Office Tips

Home Office Tips

You've decided to start a home based business. Now your next
important step is to decide where to place your home office. You
decide to place the home office in a corner of your bedroom. Or
in the corner of a dinning room. Maybe even the family room
surrounded by the kid's huge toy collection.

You reason, it's better than no office at all. Besides it
takes up a small space and cost almost zero to set up.

Wrong...Wrong...Wrong!

If you operate your home office out of a room primarily used for
another purpose you are making an enormous mistake.

A friend admits her first home office was a little nook in the
corner of her den facing a noisy street. After constant
interruptions and street noise she relocated her home office to
an unused secluded spare bedroom. A very smart move on her part!
The move increased her production ten fold.

Most experienced home office workers suggest you place your
home office in a separate area used primarily for this
function. This will entitle the business owner (you) to a nice
little tax benefit.

If your home office meets "Tax Qualifications" you might easily
deduct everything from furniture purchased to office supplies.

Once again: You must remember to qualify for these deductions
your home office must be a separate room used only to operate
your home based business.

It should not be a room used for extra storage, or for the kids
to gather after school or a guest bedroom.

Here's a few more deductions you might qualify for under current
tax regulations.

-Your office supplies
-Supplies used to clean your office
-Equipment depreciation
-Lease payments on equipment
-Rental fees on equipment
-Equipment repairs
-Business telephone line
-Business manuals
-Business training/education

Note: for up to date tax regulations visit the
IRS web-site online.

And there's a few other very good reason why your home office
should be a separate space. If your business involves personal
contact with customers you should never ever greet
them in a messy bedroom/office. Think of the first impression
you will make on your clients!

Not a very professional image!

And separating your personal and business affairs serves to
boost productivity. And puts friends and family on notice you
are serious about your business and discourage frequent
interuptions about unimportant matters.

Free Advertising Does It Really Work?

Advertising on the Internet is so competitive.
The Competition is staggering, to say the least.
You hope word of mouth will spread news about your product.
Or recommendations by satisfied customers will shift the tide to
rasing customer awareness. But how are you going to attract those
first customers to create customer awareness or buzz about
your product or service if your advertising budget is zero?

Here's a few ways I've discovered to get the word out about your
business for zero dollars.

1. Include information about your business in all letters,
memo's, correspondence. Online and off-line.

For example,
Jane Smith, Owner Perfect Fashions
http://www.yourwebsite.com....

2. Write Articles. You say you don't know anything about writing?
Or you don't have anything to write about. Think again. Everyone
has knowledge about at least one topic someone else would like
to know about. For instance, that is exactly why you are reading
this very article. Try writing as if you were talking to a friend or
writing a friend a personal letter. Pick a topic and just start
writing until you've finished what you have to write.
Check your spelling and grammar. Read the article out
loud to yourself or a friend. Does the article flow? Does it
make sense? If it meets your approval it’s time to submit to
a few ezine directories.

Here's a few popular article directories:

http://www.goarticles.com
http://businessknowhow.com/
http://www.ideamarketers.com

3. Start an ezine for your customers. Simply include
information on your topic. Write the articles or download
articles found online and copy paste to your ezine.
Writing a ezine would be a good way to
keep customers up to date on your product,
service, or changes on your website. Include
your articles and links back to your website.
Submit your ezine to the various ezine
directories online.
Here's one to get you started:
http://www.ezinedepot.com

4. Ad Swaps.
Visit ezine directories and get information on similar ezines
Contact the editor. Request an ad exchange. You place
your ad in their ezine and their ad in your ezine. A winning
situation for both parties.

5. Classified Ads.
It wouldn't hurt to place a few ads every day on the many
classified ad sites online. These days most ads are
submitted via software but surely a few advertisers
still manually submit ads and might read your ad and
click your link to your website. I often click links
to other websites when placing my ad if their
advertisement interest me. This is also a way to
check out the competition.

6. Forums.
Marketers say this is a clever way to get free
advertising. Simply join one of the forums on your
topic. Read the messages and get involved. Answer
a few questions posed by others. Or ask your own
questions and leave a link back to your website.
No blatant advertisers here, this will get you
banned quickly.

Use these free advertising methods to announce your business
to the Internet market!

Google Multimillionaire Reveals Pay Per Click Secrets!

Google Multimillionaire Reveals How He Gets Pay-Per-Clicks FREE!

A medical doctor originally from New England quit his practice in early 1999 and joined the ranks of the Internet entrepreneurs making their livings online.

After a short while experimenting with highly-targeted pay-per-click advertising he discovered a shocking oversight that most every other online promoter is still very much unaware of that allows him to get literally $10 million's in otherwise paid-for advertising but for free.

Originally not wanting to divulge this secret, the former medical practitioner maintained absolute secrecy as he went about starting over fifteen online businesses that specialized in selling everything from pet food to men and women's clothing, all the way down to electronic toys and games software (such as PlayStation, XBox, GameBoy, etc), and all the while getting free pay-per-click advertising.

His secret allowed him to top every single competitor he had for any set of keywords and phrases as he could still outbid them and set his daily budget well above theirs so much so that he literally dominated each individual niche-market even to an almost monopolistic degree.

Over a nearly eight year period to date this same gentleman has sold in excess of $300 million worth of business product, and over $166 million in the past three years alone.

The entire time this fellow has chosen to remain out of the limelight as he's developed further and perfected his secret to getting unlimited dollars' worth in pay-per-click targeted advertising.

He considers his secret as a weapon that provides him with an unfair advantage over everyone else, and has enjoyed using it almost exclusively.

While he admits that he's seen several other web business owners applying his secret to some measure, it's never been sufficiently to equal, much less exceed his application of it.

Additionally, from among the few others applying an approximation of it, they have yet to really realize how to apply it exactly as the good doctor, and have overlooked it manifold dimensions.

If done to the fullest and from all sides, any promoter can get even $1 million a day in paid-for Google advertising but without paying one dime for it, and while maintaining only the top most preferred premium spots on every page and for all keywords used.

Lastly you should know that nothing he's doing is illegal, nor does it steal revenues from the pay-per-click search engines.

So fantastic a secret this is that you must see it for yourself in its entirety as it's now readily available for your use and profit, http://tinyurl.com/3cxvpr for a limited time only.

After all this time the good doctor has decided that releasing his secret won't threaten his own wealth or application of it, and he's going to allow for a limited number of copies be sold before withdrawing it permanently.

Affiliate Programs 101

Affiliate Programs 101! by BB Lee

Like many eager, smart, entrepreneurs you are searching for quickentry into the online sales market. And you've probably learnedthat joining an affiliate program is an easy way to get started remarkably fast in an online business and generate a good income.

These sophisticated revenue sharing programs are very popular on the net. Is it any wonder this is the way most successful entrepreneurs started. Most of my online business associates use this as a sideline way to generate a reasonable income anywhere from a hundred to several thousand per month.

You should seriously consider joining a good affiliate program Now. Start profiting right away.

Upclose: When you join an affiliate program your task is to promote themerchants services or products on your website or in your ezine. This is easier than you might think because the merchants supplymembers with banners or links back to their site to promote theproduct. Plus they tally up your clicks or sales.

But Beware!

Make sure you understand all the details involved. Avoid shakyMLM programs. Only the first tier group will reap rewards. Avoid any program where you recruit other affiliates. And your earnings are based on a percentage of their profits. Yourprofits plummet if your recruits abandon the program.

Affiliate programs pay their members a fixed amount for eachsale, click through, lead, or banner impression.

Here's a simple breakdown of most payment plans:

-Pay per sale. A commission is paid for each sale yoursite/ezine generates.

-Pay per click through. You receive a payment for each validclick to the sponsors website.

-Pay per lead. You receive a payment for each sales lead for aservice or product.

-Pay per impression. You receive a payment each time a merchantsbanner or link is displayed to the merchants site.

Joining an affiliate program is easy! Just be sure to select anaffiliate program with appropriate services or products thatmatch your targeted audience or are relevant to your websites theme.

If your ezine/website attracts Rugged Out-doors types, you certainly would not display perfume or makeupfor young teen girls.

Or if your ezine/website attracts young teenagers, you certainlywould never display senior citizen products like walkers orvitamins for older adults.

Always read the fine print. Make sure you understand the paymentclause. Many affiliate programs will only send you payment afteryou've accumulated a certain sales amount. Anything from $10.00and up. Beware, if they only pay after you reach $100 or more. This might be a very important fact to consider if your site isrelatively small with few visitors per month. It might takemonths before you receive a payment.

Affiliates might pay every other week, per month or per quarter. You will receive a payment if you reach the minimum balance insales during that pay period. Most balances are accumulative. So, if you do not reach the minimum during one pay period itwill be rolled over to your next pay period and added to anysales balances. Once again, read the fine print in the affiliateagreement when you sign up for pertinent details.

Here are popular affiliate programs.

Marketing

Understanding Your Market
Market evaluation is the most critical element of successful business planning. It provides the basic data that will determine if and where you can successfully sell your product or service and how much to charge.

While it may sound deceptively simple figuring out if a market exists for your product or service, it's probably one of the most challenging requirements of business. The process involves scrutinizing your competition and your customer base and interviewing potential suppliers.

The information collected can help you, if necessary, adapt your product or service to better meet customer needs. In some rare cases, it might lead to a totally new, but financially rewarding venture.

Market ResearchConducting market research can help you: create primary and alternative sales approaches to a given market, make profit projections from a more accurate base, organize marketing activities, develop critical short/mid-term sales goals and establish the market's profit boundaries. So, how should you go about conducting your research? Two of the most important first steps are defining your goals and organizing the collection/analysis process. Maintain a set of well documented and easily accessible files so you can store and retrieve data as needed.

Questions To AskYour research should ask these basic questions:

Who are your customers? Where are they located? What are their needs and resources? Is the service or product essential in their operations or activities? Can the customer afford the service or product? Where can you create a demand for the service or product? Can you compete effectively in price, quality and delivery? Can you price the product or service to assure a profit? How many competitors provide the same service or product? What is the general economy of your service or product area? What areas within your market are declining or growing?

Market DataKnowing your market not only requires an understanding of your product, but also an understanding of your customers' socioeconomic characteristics. In conducting your research, you can access relevant market information from these sources:The Small Business Administration's OnLine computer-based electronic bulletin board can be accessed by modem. It provides immediate, round-the-clock information on the SBA's services, publications and programs. Users can access a national calendar of events such as training programs, small business seminars and international trade fairs. Most information is available at no cost. Some interactive services involve a connection fee.

Other sources include:Your Local or University Library. Trade association studies and journal articles. Regional planning organization studies on growth trends. Banks, realtors and insurance companies. Customer surveys in your market area, which you can conduct on your own by searching out existing material. Finally, research on competitors is extremely important. Visit industry trade shows to find out what your competitors are selling and how they are marketing their products. Similarly, stay current on information in industry magazines and publications.

Once you have obtained and analyzed this information, it should become the foundation of your business plan. Research data also will help you develop the basic assumptions in your financial projections, which will tell you whether or not to go into business. You should not view market research, however, as a one-time activity. Once you establish your business, you should be in touch with your customers on a continuos basis. You may have to adapt your product/service and/or marketing strategy to keep up with your customers' changing needs.

Export MarketsIn general, you should be well-established in the U.S. market before committing resources and taking on additional risk to explore export markets. Some products, such as used equipment that is obsolete in the United States but new to other countries, may be particularly well-suited for exporting right from the start. Whatever your product or service, it is never too early to explore its export potential.Researching international markets involves many of the same steps as domestic market evaluation. The first step is to identify the countries with the largest and fastest-growing markets for your product. The SBA's Automated Trade Locator Assistance System (SGAtlas) can help. This market-research tool provides two types of reports. The product report ranks the top 35 import and export markets for a particular good. The country report identifies the top 20 products most frequently traded in a target market. The National Trade Data Bank, maintained by the U.S. Department of Commerce, also contains valuable market information.

From your list of possible markets, you will want to determine which offers the best prospects. You should examine the markets in greater detail, looking at how your product quality and price compares with that of goods already available. Also, you should determine who your major customers are.

With this information, you can pick one or two export markets to explore initially. You can add more markets later, as your export skills develop. Now you are ready to conduct more in-depth market research on this target market(s), just as you did before establishing your business.

Maintaining Records

Starting A Home Based Business

Part Two

Maintaining Good Records
As the owner or manager of a small business, you invest tremendous time and energy to ensure your company's success. You want the greatest possible return on your investment, and good financial records can help.

What Went Wrong?
While it's true that success often breeds success, it's equally true that success often breeds failure -- particularly for small business. That's because as a business begins to grow rapidly, the owners often work frantically to simply meet demand, minimizing the time they devote to keeping good records. If escaping paperwork was one of your reasons for starting a business, it is critical that you hire someone to perform the necessary task of keeping your financial records. Although you must pay for these services, bear in mind that solid financial advice frequently can increase your profits, more than covering the professional fees.

Good records will help you answer important questions about your company's financial health. What's really happening in my business? Why is cash flow always a problem? How much is really profit? If you're not exactly sure, then it's time to return to the basics -- the basics of good record keeping.

Why?
Simply put, a small business that fails to keep complete and accurate financial records places its long-term success and survival in grave doubt.Complete and accurate financial record keeping is crucial to your business success.

Here's why:
Good records provide the financial data that help you operate more efficiently, thus increasing your profitability. Accurate and complete records enable you, or your accountant, to identify all your business assets, liabilities, income and expenses.

That information, when compared to appropriate industry averages, helps you pinpoint both the strong and weak phases of your business operations. Good records are essential for the preparation of current financial statements, such as the income statement (profit and loss) and cash flow projection. These statements, in turn, are critical for maintaining good relations with your banker. They also present a complete picture of your total business operation, which will benefit you as well. Good records are critical at tax time.

Poor records could cause you to underpay or overpay your taxes. In addition, good records are essential during an Internal Revenue Service audit, if you hope to answer questions accurately and to the satisfaction of the IRS.

What Exactly Will the Records Tell You?

The following checklist highlights the type of information your financial records should provide to assure your success:

How much income are you generating now, and how much income can you expect to generate in the future?

How much cash is tied up in accounts receivable (and thus not available to you) and for how long?

How much do you owe for merchandise? Rent? Equipment?

What are your expenses, including payroll, payroll taxes, merchandise and benefit plans for yourself and employees (such as health insurance, retirement, etc.)?

How much cash do you have on hand?

How much cash is tied up in inventory?

What is your actual working capital budget?

How frequently do you turnover your inventory?

Which of your product lines, departments or services are making a profit, which are breaking even, and which are financial drains?

What is your gross profit?

What is your net profit?

How does all of the financial data listed above compare with last year - - or last quarter?

How do they compare with the projections in your business plan.

How does all the financial data compare with those of your competitors?

With those of the industry?

While your review of this checklist may have uncovered some glaring deficiencies, it's never too late to correct problems related to poor record keeping. It may take a bit of time and effort to analyze the company checkbook, take inventory, review bank statements and, in general, catch up on your paperwork. It is essential, however, that you make the effort to determine the precise financial condition of your business. It is as critical as maintaining good customer relations.

Starting A Home Based Business

How to Start a Home-Based Business

Part One:

Up until recently, going to work meant traveling from home to a plant or office. Today many people do some or all of their work at home. A private market-research firm estimates that as many as 13 million people squeeze extra hours into their work week by taking work home from their full-time jobs, while some 9 million people work exclusively at home. Many people find that working at home is an ideal arrangement and decide to formally set up businesses there.

The SBA estimates that more than 3 million of these home-based businesses are now operating throughout the country.Everyday, people are striking out and achieving economic and creative independence by turning their skills into dollars. Garages, basements and attics are being transformed into the corporate headquarters of the newest entrepreneurs -- home-based business people. And with recent technological advances and a rising demand for "service-oriented" businesses, the opportunities seem to be endless.

Is a Home-Based Business for You?
Before you dive headfirst into a home-based business, it's essential that you know why you are doing it and how you will do it. To succeed, your business must be based on something greater than a desire to be your own boss; an honest assessment of your own personality; an understanding of what's involved; and a lot of hard work. You have to be willing to plan ahead, then make improvements and adjustments along the road. While there are no "best" or "right" reasons for starting a home-based business, it is vital to have a very clear idea of what you are getting into and why. Ask yourself these questions:

Are you a self-starter?
Can you stick to business if you're working at home? Do you have the necessary self-discipline to maintain schedules? Can you deal with the isolation of working from home? Working under the same roof that your family lives under may not prove to be as easy as it seems. It is important that you work in a professional environment; if at all possible, you should set up a separate office in your home.

You must consider if:
Your home has the space for a business and You can successfully run the business from your home.

Legal Requirements
A home-based business is subject to many of the same laws and regulations affecting other businesses -- and you will be responsible for complying with them. There are some general areas to watch out for, but be sure to consult an attorney and your state department of labor to find out which laws and regulations will affect your business.Zoning: Be aware of your city's zoning regulations. If your business operates in violation of them, you could be fined or closed down. Restrictions on certain goods: Certain products may not be produced in the home. Most states outlaw home production of fireworks, drugs, poisons, explosives, sanitary or medical products, and toys. Some states also prohibit home-based businesses from making food, drink or clothing.

Registration and accounting requirements:

You many need a:

work certificate or a license from the state (your business's name also may need to be registered with the state), sales tax number, separate business telephone and separate business bank account. If your business has employees, you are responsible for:
withholding income and social security taxes, and complying with minimum wage and employee health and safety laws.

Finding Your Niche
Choosing a home business is like choosing a spouse or partner -- your decision must be approached with a great deal of care. You need to learn as much about the market for any product or service as you can. Before you invest your time, effort and money, take a few moments to answer the following questions. Answers to these questions will help you separate sound ideas from those with a high potential for failure. Can you identify and describe the business you plan on establishing? What will be your product or service? Is there a demand for your product or service? What advantages do you have over your competitors? Do you have the talent and expertise needed to compete successfully?

Developing A Business Plan
If you've researched your market, thought over the pros and cons of a home-based business, and decided to go ahead, it's time to put together a business plan.Developing a business plan forces you to take an objective and critical look at your business idea. Even more, the finished product is a tool that will help move your business toward success.

A business plan should be neat, written clearly, and should include several things. The cover page should list the business name, address, mailing address, telephone number and the names of the owner(s). Identify your primary goals and objectives.

Next, give an accurate and concise description of the business:

What is the principal activity? Be specific. Give product or service descriptions. How will the business be started? Why will it succeed? Promote your idea. Use your market research. What skills and experience do you bring to the business? Marketing is the core of your business. Carefully think about the following questions, then include your marketing strategy in the business plan:

Can you market your business from home? Who and what is you market? What pricing/sales terms are you planning? How will you be competitive?

The Financial Plan
Money fuels all businesses. With a little planning, you'll find that you can avoid most financial difficulties. When drawing up a financial plan, don't worry about using estimates. The process of thinking through these questions helps develop your business skills and leads to solid financial planning.Start-up costs: To estimate your start-up costs, include all initial expenses such as fees, licenses, permits, telephone deposit, tools, office equipment and promotional expenses. Business experts say you should not expect a profit for the first eight to 10 months, so be sure to give yourself enough cushion.
